I have been posting to this blog for over 13 years, each year reporting on accomplishments over the prior year and goals for the new year.

2024 is no different. My main photography goal for the year is listed in the January submission of the 2024 C.London 52 Week Photography Challenge. Content this year will work towards that goal in addition to my general shooting. Check out my website "About" page to learn more. The website is at www.jeffmarcowitz.photography

All content posted here in the blog will also be on the website, however with a subscription to the blog, you'll continue to receive the email notifications.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this photo blog for many years and welcome to any newcomers. My hope is that the images and stories are interesting and thought-provoking as I continue this creative journey. As always, comments, critiques and suggestions (here and the website) are welcome and appreciated as they often lead to new ideas and inspiration.

Thank You.
Jeff

6/25/11 - Week 26
After meeting Kieran in San Francisco last week and admiring his photos of Bianchi bicycles, I was inspired to pull mine off the trainer and clean it up for a ride outside. Hope it doesn't rain on Sunday morning.

This week I will NOT be in San Francisco for business.  All Chicago shots this week!

Gary

I went out shooting in the Mission with some Flickr friends.  It was on Mission Street that I met Gary, stooped down, leaning against a building, reading a book and asking for change.  I asked him if I could take his picture and hear his story for $2 and he replied, "Hell yes!"  I think he's been photographed many times before because he asked if I was part of that "photo project."

Gary is 55 yrs old and hails from Virginia.  He went to Berkeley to study history &  philosophy and flunked out.  He worked for many years and even owned his own business (I can't remember what kind).  I asked how he ended up on the streets - "divorce and drugs."  Gary said he's not clean, that's why he's asking for spare change.  He lives in a tent behind some apartments and the residents there treat him like a neighbor.  Gary said he's not one of those bums who sleep in their own pool of piss.  I asked him what he thinks the future holds - he has no plans to get off the street because he gets to talk to a lot of people and is able to scrape by.

There were more questions I wanted to ask, but the Flickr peeps were a block ahead and I wanted to catch up with them for dinner.  I gave Gary $2 and wished him luck.

Totally Trashed Dash

6/14/11 - Week 24
Pulled next to this truck at a rest stop on the way to Columbus and knew immediately I had next Tuesday's TrashTalk Tuesday shot. There was not an inch of clear dashboard to be found. And this was just the tip of the iceberg. HTTT!

$60 Fill-Up

6/11/11 - Week 24
Even though gas prices were a lot lower on the way to Columbus, it still cost a small fortune to fill the tank.

Week 24 ☞ 06.11.11 - 06.17.11

Theme: On the Road, Again

This week I will have very little time in Chicago.  First Columbus, OH to visit our son and then on to San Francisco for business.  Therefore, all of my shots this week will be from somewhere other than Chicago.

What if I Don't?

6/4/11 - Week 23
This shot is the genesis of this week's P52 theme, "Break the Rules". I was compelled to disobey.  Also submitting for Cliche Saturday - Civil Disobedience.

Week 23 ☞ 06.04.11 - 06.10.11

Theme: Break the Rules

I always come up with the theme and then shoot images to fit during the week.  This week is different.  I took a shot this morning and then made up the theme around it.  This theme refers to both photographic and non-photographic rules.

Not everything I shoot makes it into the Project52.  If you are interested in checking out additional pictures, please see my Flickr Photostream at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffm211/

Unnamed

It has been almost two months since I first met her. A heartbreaking story that troubled me a great deal. My brain said "let it go" but my heart said "you can't". My heart won. So I stuck my neck out, ventured into a family's relationship that was none of my business and hoped that somewhere, somehow it would make a positive difference. The jury is still out.

I saw her for the second time tonight. We talked for a while. Once again, it made me sad, but at least this time she seemed more determined about her way out. She is a sweet, beautiful girl who I hope finds her way off the street; for her sake and that of her family. I still can't let it go. Heart 2 - Brain 0.

Top Cat

Above the rat-a-tat-tat of the jack hammers breaking up Post Street at Grant in San Francisco, I was drawn to the mellow sounds of a saxophone, reverberating off the building canyon walls.  There on the corner, leaning against the Shreve & Co. building was this lone musician plying his craft.  Foot traffic was light.  I listened for a while from across the street not wanting to break the spell of the music and wondering why he didn't change corners so as to not compete with the ambient construction.

When he finally took a break, I ventured across Grant and struck up a conversation.  Top Cat is from New York, where he spent 28 years including a stint in the service.  He got fed up with the New York winters and came out to San Francisco where he's been for 20 years.  He used to drive a flatbed repo truck although I'm not certain if that was in New York, San Francisco or both.

Like Sam Austin whom I met in early April, Top Cat is a professional musician and plays multiple instruments.  His work week is typically Thursday through Sunday in the clubs and at other times sporadically hanging out on his favorite corner.  I asked him why he competes with the road construction and he confidently stated, "it'll stop before I could even get situated somewhere else.  Besides, I really like the sound from this corner."  He was right; the jack hammers had subsided by the time he relayed this part of his story.  Top Cat actually knows Sam & Roy and often plays with Sam on Sundays.  I would have loved to purchase a Top Cat CD, but he didn't have any with him.  However, he did give me his email address and told me where he plays on Thursday nights.  Told me to email him when I'm going to be in town and he'll fix me up with some tickets and will bring along some CDs.

As Top Cat prepared to start playing again, I told him about the $2 Portraits project and asked if I could take some pictures.  He pointed to the open sax case, I obliged with a contribution and took some shots while he entertained me and others passing by.  Very likely I'll be hearing Top Cat again.
