I have been posting to this blog for over 14 years, each year reporting on accomplishments over the prior year and goals for the new year.

In 2025 and beyond, this Blog will be my main photography communication vehicle. Content will be varied and in the spirit of my approach to photography as described on the "About" page of my website at www.jeffmarcowitz.photography

The Project W pages on the website will be a curated collection of work representing the “Best Of” images posted here on the Blog. With a subscription, you'll continue to receive an email (with content) whenever I post to the Project W Blog.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this photo blog for many years and welcome to any newcomers. My hope is that the images and stories are interesting and thought-provoking as I continue this creative journey. As always, comments, critiques and suggestions (here and the website) are welcome and appreciated as they often lead to new ideas and inspiration.

Thank You.

Rookie Astro Outing

Newport State Park
Door County, WI

First ever astrophotography attempt.  And at an official "Dark Sky" location no less.

Blind Shot
Blind Shot
Intent was to capture the Milky Way, however there was no visibility through the viewfinder or LCD. The Milky Way wasn't visible to the naked eye and the Photopills App was the only guidance available.  Notwithstanding, I managed to catch a glimpse.

For this shot, I put on the adapted fisheye lens and shot straight up into the sky.  I have no idea if there is any Milky Way here.

The Milky Way attempts were mediocre at best, however, I captured this moonrise photo over Lake Michigan at 12:02am EDT.  Earliest completion of the weekly challenge in my 3.5 years of participation.

2023_CLondon52_February: The Everyday

From the C.London website: "Now that goals have been sorted out, it’s time to work. All the prompts for the month of February can be done from the comfort of your own home. This will allow you to find your rhythm and explore the space in an environment you’re relaxed in."

"1.  One object.  For this prompt, we’ll be exploring a single object in various ways. Try out different angles, various lighting, maybe even placement in a larger scene. Your end goal is discover how you can approach the same subject from many different perspectives. Feel free to submit one photo, or a curated diptych or triptych."

In 2014, we were so moved by the story of Nicky Imber, who escaped Dachau by impersonating a German officer, we bought one of his numbered sculptures at a gallery in Tzfat, Israel.

"2.  What’s in your wallet bag?  Here we're going to look at the things we carry with us on a daily basis. Use this as an opportunity to try out staging your items. Some ideas may be placing the items in a traditional still life setting, a top-down shot, cascading from your bag, etc."

See below for this month's prompt #4...you'll understand this shot!

"3.  Your Home.  'Home' has different meanings to each of us. Is it the space in which you live? Is it with those with whom you feel most comfortable? Is it being engaged in something you love and are passionate about? Think about what 'home' means to you, and tell us through your photography."

The center of our home with a focus on family.  Image projected on TV is from my mother-in-law's 95th birthday party with 4 generations of family.

"4.  A Day in the Life.  This one needs a little explanation, and is one of my all-time favorite exercises. It’s a bit involved, so stay with me. Choose one day this month where you will document the entire day - from the moment you wake up, to the moment you go to sleep. Aim to take at least one photo every hour. At the end, cull it down to no more than 10 photos which tell the story of your day. Then, choose just one hero photo which sums it up in its entirety."

While on vacation last month, I fractured a tooth.  This was the day I took care of it.  While the extraction and implant were not painless, this photo represents the most painful part of the day.  See this link for all photos of the day.

Where Is Everyone?

Where Is Everyone?
2022_CLondon52w49: ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Dealer's Choice

From the C.London website: "Who inspires you? It could be another photographer, a filmmaker, writer, musician, traditional artist, etc.  Share with us who inspires you."

I gain inspiration from many different sources and for different reasons. With limited opportunity to photograph this week, I selected Wes Anderson since we were headed to the movies and I enjoyed the Week 19 challenge.  Inspiration for this image was: 1) Quirky - the ability to incorporate the Nikon fisheye lens on my Sony mirrorless body, 2) Perspective - symmetry, emphasized by the wide crop and fisheye perspective, 3) Color - color grading with a Wes Anderson preset reinforced the theater vibe and 4) Setting - actually made in a live, virtually empty, movie theater; a part of the post-covid story.

Just picked up an adapter to fit my old Nikon 10.5mm fisheye to my Sony full-frame mirrorless body. Took it to the theatre, just in case a photo op materialized.
