I have been posting to this blog for over 14 years, each year reporting on accomplishments over the prior year and goals for the new year.

In 2025 and beyond, this Blog will be my main photography communication vehicle. Content will be varied and in the spirit of my approach to photography as described on the "About" page of my website at www.jeffmarcowitz.photography

The Project W pages on the website will be a curated collection of work representing the “Best Of” images posted here on the Blog. With a subscription, you'll continue to receive an email (with content) whenever I post to the Project W Blog.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this photo blog for many years and welcome to any newcomers. My hope is that the images and stories are interesting and thought-provoking as I continue this creative journey. As always, comments, critiques and suggestions (here and the website) are welcome and appreciated as they often lead to new ideas and inspiration.

Thank You.
Jeff

Cruising over some mountains of snow, I grabbed this shot as a streak-saver and the one which completes my 6X Weekly Warrior status.

Desert Shores

Desert Shores, CA
Population:  ~1,100

Once a thriving resort town along the western coast of the Salton Sea, its heyday being in the 1950-1960s, Desert Shores has deteriorated over the decades largely due to the residual effects of Salton Sea contamination.

Currently, there are several restoration projects underway and planned by local and state agencies, including water restoration to the marina.

I spent an afternoon capturing photographs of the town and had some good encounters with locals as well.

B/W photos were captured on Kodak Tri-X 400 film with a Voigtlander Bessa R4M camera and a Voigtlander 40mm F1.4 Nokton Classic
lens.  Color photos were captured digitally on a Sony A7Cii camera and a Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm F4 MC lens.

Getting some pretty inconsistent results from my old Minolta film camera. Trying to figure out if it's the photographer, the camera and/or the lens 🤷‍♂️🤣.

Truth

Palm Desert, CA

On this trip, we learned of an art exhibition called DesertX 2025 (https://desertx.org/) consisting of several installations around Coachella Valley.  Unfortunately, I only made it to one of the exhibits this year...and plan to attend many more in future years.

Photos below are of an awesome sculpture in the desert entitled "Truth Arrives in Slanted Beams" by Sarah Meyohas.  For more information, check out https://desertx.org/dx/dx-25-coachella-valley/sarah-meyohas and https://sarahmeyohas.com/.  It was fun to photograph as the sun was setting behind the mountains.

I am not a bird photographer by any stretch of the definition.  After a hike up to the cookhouse at this ski resort, I captured this photo with my kit lens.  Every once in awhile, one gets lucky!

Went out to shoot some Milky Way photos before the moonrise, but cloud cover killed that effort. I turned the camera around to the other direction and captured the rising moon before it broke over the mountain horizon.

52Frames - Week 39 - Red

Traveling in Colorado this week where the autumn color change is magnificent.  The area we are in displays predominantly yellows and oranges with very few reds.  Starting out on a chilly morning hike, my buddy Irwin pulled out his sweatshirt and I knew at that moment my streak was saved.

Good Life

Good Life
CLondon52w45: Still, Life

From the C.London website: "I’m going to give you little guidance on this one because I want you to interpret it as you will.  Do you read this as still life, the artistic genre?  Maybe as life being still.  Maybe life still going on.  However you read this, you do you."

My intent for this week was to make an image that depicted both "stillness" and a slice of "life".  I will admit that this image was not specifically set up to respond to this challenge, however when reviewing my photos of the day, thought this image best expressed those qualities.  I am grateful for this beautiful day.

The wildfires in the west are seriously affecting the air quality in the Rockies.  This is clear compared to what it was like a day earlier.

Snowcap in July

7/12/11 - Week 28
Flying over Yosemite today, I was surprised at the amount of snowcap remaining.  Posted for my buddy Irwin because I know how much he likes aerial shots.

Three Mile Climb

2/25/11 - Week 8
Had to work for a few hours this morning and missed an easy stroll with Lin and our friends.  So instead, I went out later on my own and did a 6.6 mile hike.  This shot is from Inspiration Point, the highest spot on this particular trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
