I have been posting to this blog for over 13 years, each year reporting on accomplishments over the prior year and goals for the new year.

2024 is no different. My main photography goal for the year is listed in the January submission of the 2024 C.London 52 Week Photography Challenge. Content this year will work towards that goal in addition to my general shooting. Check out my website "About" page to learn more. The website is at www.jeffmarcowitz.photography

All content posted here in the blog will also be on the website, however with a subscription to the blog, you'll continue to receive the email notifications.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this photo blog for many years and welcome to any newcomers. My hope is that the images and stories are interesting and thought-provoking as I continue this creative journey. As always, comments, critiques and suggestions (here and the website) are welcome and appreciated as they often lead to new ideas and inspiration.

Thank You.
Jeff

Irwin

Irwin
My good friend Irwin is always a willing subject for which I'm grateful.  This image is from a shoot in July 2021 [see previous post for story] that allowed me to try out some new editing techniques learned at this past week's AdobeMax virtual conference.

52Frames - Week 44 - Shot With A Phone

CLondon52w44: Show Motion

From the C.London website: “Light trails, blurred commuters, soft water.  Just a few ways to show motion.  How do we do it?  With a slow shutter speed.  You’ll need a steady hand, tripod, or just a solid surface to keep the camera still.  A tip: using the self-timer or a remote control for non-handheld shots will take out the risk of camera shake while pressing the shutter button.  Find a moving subject and show its motion with a slower shutter speed.  Can’t control your shutter speed?  No problem!  Take this opportunity to think creatively.  How else can you show motion?”

With the 52Frames deadline approaching, and a new CLondon52 week just beginning, I was sitting at my desk, staring at my clock, wondering what photos I could make for each.  The clock motion was mesmerizing and I suddenly realized another 2fer was staring back at me!

"Grandfather" clock + iPhone + Halide Camera app + LR Mobile = Show Motion With A Phone.  And after attending several Adobe Max sessions this week, the image was processed 100% on the phone as well.

Childhood Dream Car
CLondon52w43: Stop Movement (Alternate)

Out shooting photos with my friend photofinish_sid, we agreed he'd take precedence at using the covered bridge images for the challenge.  Therefore, I'm only posting this as an Alternate, largely because this car was my childhood dream car...a canary yellow vette.

CLondon52w43: Stop Movement

From the C.London website: "Stop a bird, plane, or even Superman in their tracks with just this one easy step!  Using a fast shutter speed will freeze motion.  No need to worry about those shaky hands (of which I suffer), nor do you need a fancy tripod/stable surface.  Other steps may be necessary, i.e. readjusting other settings.

Find a moving subject and stop its motion with a fast shutter speed.  Can’t control your shutter speed? No problem! Take this opportunity to think creatively. How else can you freeze motion?"

This fountain in downtown Long Grove, IL offered an excellent opportunity for some freeze action.

Three Jeffs and a Gene

Three Jeffs and a Gene
CLondon52w42: Alike

From the C.London website: Open For Interpretation

As soon as I arranged this golf game, I knew this was going to be the shot.  We got it out of the way early, so thinking about it wouldn't screw up my game.  Didn't work; game was screwed up anyway.

The four of us worked together for many years before Gene and this Jeff retired.

Low Key Low-Key
52Frames - Week 42 - Low Key

Taking advantage of a stormy evening for a low-key shot from my balcony.  Across from our condo is a small office building with reflective glass.  All the lights were off in the offices so turning lights on in the condo made for silhouette backlighting of my reflection.  Hence a low-key, reflected silhouette, self-portrait image.

CLondon52w41: Asymmetry

From the C.London website: “Oh yes, we know symmetry is pleasing, but can asymmetry be as well?  But, of course!  Try it out for yourself - make an unbalanced, asymmetric image.  Same as last week, it can be the entire image, or an element of the image.”

As previously described back in Week 22, the animals on our balcony are a rambunctious group.  I think Doodle-Doo is pissed because he can't reach the Halloween pumpkins.

CLondon52w40: Symmetry

From the C.London website: “Humans love symmetry - something about the balance it creates is just inherently pleasing to the eye.  For this week, make an image which utilizes symmetry - either the entire image, or an element of the image.”

Ten years ago, Lin & I made our first (and only) trip to London and the English countryside.  There we purchased an artist's handmade, signed and numbered kaleidoscope made out of pewter and stained glass.  It is one of our favorite travel souvenirs and viewing it is mesmerizing.

Capturing its beauty & conveying the symmetry of its designs with a macro lens was quite a challenge.  Successful?  You be the judge.

Nighttime GAS

Nighttime GAS
52Frames - Week 40 - Dreamscape

The story on how this image came to be...

Original shot was just going to be the new bedding that my wife just bought for our bedroom.  After reading the challenge more carefully, I realized the need to introduce some dream thoughts into the image.  Of late, one of my new photo challenge friends has been touting the upcoming pocketable GR IIIx and I've been dreaming about how I'd use it.  The onset of Gear Acquisition Syndrome is not subsiding and I just may have to succumb.
