I have been posting to this blog for over 13 years, each year reporting on accomplishments over the prior year and goals for the new year.

2024 is no different. My main photography goal for the year is listed in the January submission of the 2024 C.London 52 Week Photography Challenge. Content this year will work towards that goal in addition to my general shooting. Check out my website "About" page to learn more. The website is at www.jeffmarcowitz.photography

All content posted here in the blog will also be on the website, however with a subscription to the blog, you'll continue to receive the email notifications.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this photo blog for many years and welcome to any newcomers. My hope is that the images and stories are interesting and thought-provoking as I continue this creative journey. As always, comments, critiques and suggestions (here and the website) are welcome and appreciated as they often lead to new ideas and inspiration.

Thank You.
Jeff

Even with AC, this baby is constantly running during the hot and humid weather we've been having.

Libertyville, IL

"Opened on August 27, 1937, the Liberty Theatre was designed by architects Edward P. Rupert and William L. Pereira in the Art Moderne style including a stunning tall vertical sign. The facade was of cream-colored terra-cotta, trimmed in dark blue.

At some point, the Liberty Theatre lost its Moderne facade, including the vertical sign, and compared to the original, the current one is rather plain.

The Liberty Theatre was converted at some point into a twin. It was until June 2006 part of the RMC chain, and then operated by “C” You at the Movies, Inc, along with the Antioch Theatre in Antioch, the Dune Theatres in Zion, and the McHenry Indoor and Outdoor Theatres in McHenry. The Liberty 1 & 2 Theatres was closed by Golden Age Cinemas at the end of January 2020."

On 8/11/20, the Libertyville Village Board in a 7 to 0 vote, accepted the findings of the Historical Preservation Commission to deny the demolition permit for the Liberty Theater.

52Frames - Week 34 - Rule of Odds

Out golfing and pulling my ball out of a water  hazard, I was able to capture these guys having a conversation.  Probably discussing how to avoid the incoming missiles.

Spent a couple of hours shooting photos in the Third Ward.  It was a beautiful day and a flotilla of kayakers passed under one of the bridges.

52Frames - Week 33 - Night Photography

I was intent on shooting light trails for this week's 52Frames challenge on Night Photography.

Of the many shots I took, this is the #1 pick (with an assist on the selection from my friend, Anna).  I was perched on this corner, camera on tripod, just shooting away at traffic patterns and light sequences.  Timing was everything on this capture.

52Frames - Week 33 - Night Photography (Alternate)

I was intent on shooting light trails for this week's 52Frames challenge on Night Photography.

Of the many shots I took, this is the #2 pick.  I set-up at a tollway oasis, camera on tripod, just shooting away at traffic light trails.  While the light trails were good, the photo was boring.  So I captured some higher shutter speed shots with vehicles and ghosted them in via a 3-image composite (first ever) using blend mode and opacity adjustments in PS.

52Frames - Week 33 - Night Photography (Alternate)

I was intent on shooting light trails for this week's 52Frames challenge on Night Photography.

Of the many shots I took, this is the #3 pick.  I was shooting in the opposite direction and had to swing the camera around on the tripod quickly when I heard the warning bells.  Lucky capture.

Road to Taksim Square

Road to Taksim Square
Istanbul, Turkey (from the archives)

It was rainy in Istanbul when we were there 10 years ago.  Got caught in a storm but stopped to capture a street scene one evening with handheld long exposure.

A New Experience

A New Experience52Frames - Week 32 - A New Experience

With Covid concerns, I opted to focus my new experience on a shooting technique rather than a geographic location.

One of the links on the 52Frames site took me to a tutorial on Photoelasticity.   I had never heard of that term nor technique.  This image consists of my laptop screen as an illuminated backdrop, some bunched up saran wrap and a polarizing filter on the lens.

Not my usual genre, but a fun exercise nonetheless.

Normally, I'm not a huge fan of selective color.  However, this sign jumped out at me from across the train tracks on this non-descript warehouse building in downtown Libertyville.

52Frames - Week 31 - Water

Wanted to try some stop action this week with water.  Since I don't have a flash for my Sony mirrorless, I pulled out the old Panasonic GX7 with on-camera flash.

My wife thought I was crazy, shooting in the dark on a stepstool and trying to stay dry.

Shower head by Kohler.
