Had to use selective color again in order to keep my personal 52Frames challenge streak this year of B/W.  Below is the main submission and a couple of alternates.  All photographed 4/9/26.

Desert Shores

Desert Shores, CA

Population:  ~1,100

Once a thriving resort town along the western coast of the Salton Sea, its heyday being in the 1950-1960s, Desert Shores has deteriorated over the decades largely due to the residual effects of Salton Sea contamination.

Currently, there are several restoration projects underway and planned by local and state agencies, including water restoration to the marina.



I spent an afternoon capturing photographs of the town and had some good encounters with locals as well.



B/W photos were captured on Kodak Tri-X 400 film with a Voigtlander Bessa R4M camera and a Voigtlander 40mm F1.4 Nokton Classic
lens.  Color photos were captured digitally on a Sony A7Cii camera and a Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm F4 MC lens.

An iconic motel located on the edge of downtown Steamboat Springs.  I say iconic because it even has logo merchandise for sale in some of the souvenir shops!

While this shot would have earned the extra credit for Street Photography, the negative space isn't as strong as the shot I selected.

This photo does however continue the "old motel" theme started a couple of weeks ago.

52Frames - Week 28 - Edited By Someone Else

With the freedom to shoot any subject this week, and have someone else edit, I wanted to shoot my favorite genre, Street Photography.  However, with Covid, I also had to avoid mingling amongst strangers.

Out on a drive, camera at the ready, I saw this old, non-descript motel; one of those likely frequented by truckers back in the day when Milwaukee Avenue was a major truck route before the advent of interstates and superhighways.  Today, who knows...hourly rates maybe?

I shot about a dozen frames (none of them stellar), selected 3 of them and sent off to a super-creative photographer in my 52Frames Mini-Group, Anna Hylton.  Anna described her creative process as follows:
"I loved the old timey hotel marquee - I can just picture it lit up with neon - very Route 66! so I decided to focus on it with a severe crop.  Similarly, I chose the b&w because the inherent colors do nothing for the scene (that's the rule I use: do the colors add anything? if not, ditch 'em!).  I added a 50px white border to bring some support to the whole thing AND to give it an old-timey, polaroidy feel..."

IMHO, Anna did an amazing job!  I am very grateful for her excellent work and the lessons I learned from her process.
