I have been posting to this blog for over 13 years, each year reporting on accomplishments over the prior year and goals for the new year.

2024 is no different. My main photography goal for the year is listed in the January submission of the 2024 C.London 52 Week Photography Challenge. Content this year will work towards that goal in addition to my general shooting. Check out my website "About" page to learn more. The website is at www.jeffmarcowitz.photography

All content posted here in the blog will also be on the website, however with a subscription to the blog, you'll continue to receive the email notifications.

Thanks to all of you who have followed this photo blog for many years and welcome to any newcomers. My hope is that the images and stories are interesting and thought-provoking as I continue this creative journey. As always, comments, critiques and suggestions (here and the website) are welcome and appreciated as they often lead to new ideas and inspiration.

Thank You.
Jeff

Places Seen & Not Seen...Yet

Places Seen & Not Seen...Yet
52 Frames - Week 12 - Books

Travel has been a topic of discussion the last couple of weeks given the craziness of the world right now.  We've cancelled one trip and hoping we don't have to cancel others.

I pulled out our travel book collection of places we've been and others we've not yet been.  Hopefully, the unused ones will get used someday!

52 Frames - Week 11 - Alternate

On vacation this past week celebrating retirement, I was having a tough time with the triangle challenge.  Took this as my literal fall-back shot to keep the streak going.  Glad I didn't need it as my primary shot!

52 Frames - Week 11 - Triangular Composition

On vacation this week celebrating retirement, I was having a tough time with this week's challenge.  Laying around on a lounge chair after a couple of afternoon beers, I saw the triangles on the underside of the umbrellas.  Challenge solved!

Abandoned

Abandoned
52Frames - Week 10 - Abandoned (Alternate)

Bombay Beach, CA has seen better days.  Once a thriving resort community on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea, the town is home to approximately 275 residents (per the last census) and a tremendous amount of disrepair and decay.  Much of the town has been abandoned since the Salton Sea is drying up and subject to agricultural runoff which has become toxic.  Some long-time residents remain and there is a budding artist community that would like to revive the town’s old glory.

Once Upon a Time...
52 Frames - Week 10 - Abandoned

Bombay Beach, CA has seen better days.  Once a thriving resort community on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea, the town is home to approximately 275 residents (per the last census) and a tremendous amount of disrepair and decay.  Much of the town has been abandoned since the Salton Sea is drying up and subject to agricultural runoff which has become toxic.  Some long-time residents remain and there is a budding artist community that would like to revive the town’s old glory.

A levee extends along the western edge of the town, protecting it from occasional flash flooding that can occur since it lies 230 feet below sea level.  The area above the levee was once the beach; now a barren wasteland showing remnants of old structures and the growth of new sculptures.

Since Bombay Beach is an hour away from our resort in Rancho Mirage, I had intended to only spend an hour wandering around.  2.5 hours later, I wrapped it up with many photos from which to choose for this week’s challenge.  Feels like I barely scratched the surface of photographic opportunities there, so will definitely return on another trip.
