Debra
Via Flickr:
On my way to the train, she was standing along the busy sidewalk shaking her plastic cup. I told her about the $2 Portrait project and she readily agreed to participate. Debra is a born and raised Chicagoan who lives in Riverdale on the south side with her two children ages 15 and 17. She also has a 38 year old son, which surprised me. Debra is 58 and says she’s out on the street to “help make ends meet”. She smiled broadly when I told her she didn’t look old enough to have a 38 year old…said she really appreciated the compliment.
We talked a short time about the south side, where I lived until age 9 and my wife lived until age 18. Debra was talkative & friendly and I would have liked to spend more time with her learning more of her story. I gave her $2, wished her a happy New Year and we shook hands as I took off for my train.

I especially like the double hat with the scarf inbetween. You need that for the 9 degree temps.

I was right there at the glass shooting away and these guys were so intent on their meal, they never looked up. Never said a word to each other either.

I first asked him if he's ever lit his beard on fire…he said no. Then I asked if I could take his picture…he said yes. But he wouldn't look at me.

Walking along the Danube waterfront looking through my viewfinder, I snapped this shot right before our shoulders collided. Needless to say, he was not happy. Nor was my wife, who gave me an earful!

Against Inhumanity
Via Flickr:
For our day in Vienna, I rented a bicycle and rode all around the city center. In front of Parliament, I met Zäzilia Mayr. She had just participated in a large protest against the Austrian government's inhumanity toward refugees.
I spoke to her for quite a while; her English was okay and my German was non-existent. In 2009, she rode a bicycle from Vienna to Jerusalem (or maybe it was Istanbul) as part of a peace mission. Zäzilia is a writer and poet and blogs at "Sichtweisen". She shared a belief of hers with me: "In every chest there is a heart". Yes, a very interesting person she was. Helped make my day in Vienna a memorable one.

Shoes
Via Flickr:
Arriving in Budapest on Yom Kippur, we wanted to visit the Shoe Memorial along the Danube River. This memorial commemorates the Jews who were lined up along the river, tied together and then shot, one person pulling the whole line into the river with them.
A solemn visit on a solemn day.

Czech Guy
Via Flickr:
Walking around one night in Prague, I saw him approaching folks with his hand out. An unusual sight there since most panhandlers take a very subserviant position on their knees with head down and literally hat in hand.
When he approached me, I attempted to speak with him, but he spoke no English and I spoke no Czech. I showed him my camera and a 50 Kc coin and he nodded.
