One would expect a great Jerusalem salad in Jerusalem. This place had it along with the best falafels and hummus EVER.

Jeff
Towards the end of the Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk in Chicago, I heard him at the corner of Madison & Canal chanting a loud mantra, “Can you spare some change?” As I observed for a few minutes, everyone passed him by. So I approached him and asked if he’d heard of $2 Portraits. He hadn’t and agreed to tell me his story and let me take his picture. I snapped a few shots and he began to tell me his brief story.
Jeff was born and raised in Chicago and has lived on the west side for all of his 47 years. He worked in a warehouse for 23 years and became disabled so hits the streets to supplement his disability income. He is not married but has 3 kids who live in Chicago who he sees fairly often. He is currently living with his girlfriend. A couple more minutes of small talk and I thanked Jeff for speaking with me and gave him $2. He thanked me and as I rose to catch up with the photowalk group, his mantra began again…”can you spare some change?”

Jason
We had just started the Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk in Chicago heading east on Jackson from Union Station. He was sitting at the bridge holding a sign and I asked him if he’d heard of $2 Portraits. He hadn’t but agreed to participate after I explained it.
Jason is 30 years old and from New Orleans. He lost both his parents in Katrina and came to Chicago with his brother shortly thereafter. His brother was a member of Hell’s Angels and “was into some bad things.” Everything that Jason had was in his brother’s name and he lost it all when his brother was convicted of federal crimes under the RICO act. His brother is serving a 99 year sentence and Jason has been on the street for about 2.5 years.
Jason held the same expression throughout our brief conversation. I took a few shots and gave him $2 and wished him luck. Afterwards, I wondered how someone in his situation can pull themselves out. Sad.
